Could polygamy be on the rise in Russia and Ukraine? According to a recent RT.com report, an increasing number of women in these countries are finding themselves in shared relationships, not necessarily by choice, but due to shifting demographics and limited options for marriage.
While polygamy is not legally recognized in Russia or Ukraine in 2025, the report highlights a growing trend of women “sharing” a man, simply because they believe finding a devoted, monogamous partner is nearly impossible in their home country.
This raises an important question: Why are so many Russian and Ukrainian women seeking love abroad? The shortage of marriage-minded men, combined with economic challenges, has led many women to explore foreign dating opportunities, where they hope to find stability and commitment.
In this post, we’ll break down the reality behind this so-called trend and explore what it means for international dating. Is polygamy really becoming a norm—or is it simply a reflection of a deeper societal issue?

RT.com reports: are polygamous relationships and marriages in Russia and Ukraine a new trend?
The report is a great example of the difference between the demographic paradigm between Russia/Ukraine and the Western world. I have to say that RT.com does not condone the polygamist aspect of this report, however it is a great testament to the vast abundance of attractive available women for marriage in Russia and Ukraine.
This “sharing” seems to be a sad case of Ukrainian and Russian women who have just given up on finding a true love and partner for life in their native country. Besides, in my opinion, this report gives the best explanation why so many Russian and Ukrainian women hope to find their match abroad.

Polygamous marriages are not recognized in the Russian Federation. In Lebanon, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore polygamy is only legal for Muslims. In Nigeria and South Africa, polygamous marriages under customary law and for Muslims are legally recognized.
